Recently I discovered Biblioabrazo, a blog with just the right words to draw us in to their conversation about books: “Entra, la puerta está abierta para participar, leer, descubrir y pasar un buen rato juntos.” (Come in, our door is open to participate, read, discover and spend a good time together.) Doing just what they promise, along with their beautiful graphics, the blog showcases excellent books in Spanish which might be missed by people like me living in the United States. By signing up with your email, you can receive a post with captions of their blog entries which discuss beautiful picture books in Spanish. See their discussion posted on Jan 10th where Diario secreto de Pulgarcito, by Phillippe Lechermeier and Rebecca Dautremer is discussed. Note: After trying unsuccessfully several times to link Biblioabrazo's page here, I am opting to just post the link so you can copy & paste to get there. http://biblioabrazo.wordpress.com/2014/01/10/diario-secreto-de-pulgarcito-philippe-lechermeier-y-rebecca-dautremer/

However, the problem with the lack of availability of these great books in the United States continues. Here is the latest of the many answers I have received when I have tried to purchase books in Spanish:

So far, only a few bookstores or publishing companies will sell these books to interested book lovers in the United States. How can we build bridges to get these books to our children in the US who speak Spanish? According to a Pew Research Center survey done in 2011, "A record 37.6 million persons ages 5 years and older speak Spanish at home" in the United States. It is our duty, as librarians, book lovers, children's literature fans, to get these jewels in the hands of children.

Please share sites or companies who are willing to help us build the bridge to get these books into children's hands.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Gracias, Antonio G. Iturbe

Editorial Pintar Pintar (Spain) continues to produce excellent quality picture books for children. The last one which has caught my attention is a poem about Loles, a girl who hated books so much she would always erase the print in them. One day she is so, so sorry she decides to write everything she has erased. Packed with one hundred notebooks, one textbook, four hundred pencils, and lots and lots of deep thinking, she isolates herself. As she furiously writes, she goes on to discover her dreams, tenderness, the strength to overcome her fears, and more.

Take a moment to watch this beautifully crafted book trailer: Loles por Aurelio González Ovies, ilustraciones de Julio Antonio Blasco. Hopefully in the future we will be able to find this and more beautiful books from Editorial Pintar Pintar in the United States. Note: Should someone spot this book on this side of the ocean, please drop us comment.
Ruiz Zafón's use of the Spanish language is excellent, even when writing for a younger group. The words chosen to craft the story make the reading pleasurable, though some areas of the plot lacked definition. This title will become part of our collection.
"Picture books are for everybody at any age, not books to be left behind
as we grow older. The best ones leave a tantalising gap between the
pictures and the words, a gap that is filled by the reader's
imagination, adding so much to the excitement of reading a book." Anthony Browne

I would add that the best picture books leave a gap filled not just by the reader's heart. The best picture books leave us with that good feeling that can't be captured, bottled, or packaged. As I write this I think of so many picture books that I treasure, such as Cicatrices (Marcelo Birmajer), Mr. Bow Tie (Karen Barbour), Un secreto del bosque (Javier Sobrino & Elena Odriozola), El pato y la muerte (Wolf Erlbruch), Sophie's Masterpiece (Eileen Spinelli), and Galimoto (Karen Lynn Williams). Many more can be added here, can you think of some?

I meet Duck, who is oblivious to Death; but I also sympathize with Death, whose words seem to make a lot of sense. I know Duck will probably die, but I do not want it to happen. "I've been around since the day you were born ... just in case" - tells Duck to Death. Suddenly I witness a surprising but brief relationship between Duck and Death. I did not expect this or Death's reaction to the inevitable.

This is a book for everyone. Right now I admire it as a book for adults, especially those like me who have been affected by the death of our loved ones. But I also think it should be a book to read to children to prepare them for life and death. The cordial and friendly relationship between death and the duck, the casualness of their relationship, and the depth in their farewell to the pond, as well as their comments from the top of the tree, make this book one to think and ponder, and feel and absorb. The illustrations, which focus mainly on the two characters, are remarkable.

Recently I was thinking about El pato y la muerte, a picture book I read while I was visiting Chile. I remembered how moved I was with the plot’s unfolding, and how I felt as the text and the illustrations wove into just the right package. I set it aside meaning to purchase it, but with everything we were doing forgot to buy it. A year later, as Amy and I prepared for a presentation at the Wisconsin Library Association conference, the title came up in our conversation making me recall how upset I was as I left Chile and forgot to buy the book.

A week ago I went online determined to find it: it is definitely one of those books. While looking for it, I found or Casa del libro , a bookstore in Spain which specializes selling books online. Having never ordered a book from a company out of the US, I was somehow reluctant to place the order, but the fact that the book was one I had to have convinced me to go ahead.

The ordering process was straightforward, pretty much like ordering from any online bookstore in the US. The shipping rate was more that I would have liked to pay, but in all fairness, considering the book came from another continent, I could not complain. Soon after placing the order I received a confirmation email and later another message about approximate times for receiving the package.

The book arrived fairly quickly, before the time they announced it would make it home. The packaging was excellent and the condition of the book superb. With an experience like this, I am definitely ordering from them again.

Go ahead and drop us a line if you know of another online store like this. The library is named, Centro Lector. Their mission is to promote literacy and culture by providing the community access to the best quality books. When we visited, I immediately felt “at home” in the children’s library and started reading and taking notes on all the books I wanted to find for my school’s library to share with children here.

Now, I'm being reminded to make new discoveries browsing their catalog and website (http://www.centrolector.cl). Also, La Fundacíon Germán Sánchez Ruiperez de Salamanca and the International Center for Children’s Literature (http://www.fundaciongsr.es) in Spain has supported their efforts. Sifting through the myriad of websites to find reliable information on children’s books originally published in Spanish takes time. The blog's opening page includes a hilarious photo of Pelayo replicating the look of a statue of Quijote, plus links to all kinds of goodies, both for kids and adults. It's definitely worth visiting often. As I write this I am trying to find a way to purchase his latest Lucía Moñitos for our school library.

A second surprise awaited me while reading more posts by barbarianos. El cuarto de los cuentos, a blog by author Ana Tortosa, where we find her describing her latest book: "Daniela is an authentic feast for our senses and emotions; it presents us a child who can be imagined just how each of us does; Daniela is light, she is water, she is magic, Daniela is all play and pure emotion. Being next to Daniela and her dreams is to do so in any child's dreams, imagining like any child who changes color like chameleons; changes flavor like a multi-flavored ice cream. Daniela is the essence of the human being, is part of the four elements, metamorphoses as a mermaid, as a flower, as fruit. She goes from vast to miniscule because like any child, everything is important for Daniela, from a bread crumb to an enormous and prodigious animal. That is how Daniela is, and so much more. The latest entry, titled Una imagen, mil palabras (One image, a thousand words) showcases an illustration by Matías Acosta (Uruguay) that could spark quite a number of words. When first seeing it, the viewer might think a white space is all that is there, suddenly a thread is seen, then more... where is this character going? Why? Who is he? A caption underneath the illustration invites the reader to write a story, a poem, a short narration.
Esta
A feature of the blog is the Galería de libros mágicos (Magical Books Gallery) which contains a slide show of 47 magical books. Once a book cover is selected on this slide show, the reader is directed to a Picassa album housing 47 covers (so far) of the books. Our current and last school theme, We share stories of the world, can be any librarian’s favorite, and every year I look forward to using the globe to take off in any direction with the students and reading different world stories. This week, all third graders and I departed on an imaginary plane from Chicago O'Hare and went south, south, south to that thin long country called Chile. I briefly spoke about the Mapuche, went over some words everyone reading the story should know (ruca, machi, huemul, araucaria), and proceeded to read the story. As I read La niña de la calavera, I could see in the students’ eyes how they were getting more and more in to the story. This happened with each of the four classes that listened to the story, a good sign in any book that is read aloud.

Click on the previous link (La niña de la calavera) to listen to a retelling of the story.

La niña de la calavera is the story of a beautiful girl who has many suitors and a jealous stepmother. Does this sound familiar? The girl has found a lad she loves and will be getting married. However, the stepmother is very jealous and gets a potion that when spread over the girl’s face, turns it into a skull. When the girl’s suitor sees her skull face, he screams and goes away. The girl is now too ashamed to live with her family, so she goes to the woods and lives there. One day, she finds an ant, whose leg is caught between two stones. The girl helps the ant, and the ant helps the girl in return. The same happens with a huemul and a puma, breaking the spell eventually and the girl finding a lad and living happily ever after.

The story has all the ingredients of a fairy tale, but that is not all. Elements of Mapuche culture are woven throughout, some of which will be questioned by older students. Open up the conversation, and if you don’t know details, get students to search and find the answers to their questions.

As far as our school, our students can’t wait for me to catalog the book so they can check it out.Mayrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01074901905495083432noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149217227074529426.post-46819514108137088652009-04-17T19:33:00.003-05:002009-04-17T19:42:07.846-05:00Cicatrices by Marcelo Birmajer

CICATRICES

Marcelo Birmajer (author) and Gustavo Aimar (illustrator)
19 x 24 cm.

Cicatrices (Scars) is a poignant, yet beautifully told story about a lad in love with a capricious girl who won't accept him until all his scars are removed. Since we had a short time to present our topic, each one of us chose ten of our favorite books to describe briefly. People walk past him without noticing him or realizing how his hunger is so vast that it encompasses every thing he sees. All he sees looks like food: people, fountains, the sky, a little girl…
As I turn the pages I wonder what is this author going to do with the storyline: will she suddenly find someone to give Hugo some food? Will Hugo walk into a shelter and get some food?

No, none of those solutions to the plot line are presented. Silvia Schujer digs deeper, and Hugo chances upon someone that is as needy as he is: a dog. Initially, the dog looks like food to Hugo: a nice sausage wrapped in a bun, but later we realize the dog is as hungry as the child, and just as needy for companionship.

This is definitely a good story to get students talking about various topics. Although the concepts brought along are profound, the text is not. The book can be used with students with various degrees of profiency in Spanish, as well as students whose Spanish is their first language.

Silvia Schujer's bio can be found here, so is a list of her books.

An interview where Silvia discusses how she began to read and authors she has read over the years can be found here.

A video where Silvia describes her path from writing for adults to books for children can be found here.

Read about the author and the illustrator in this interview: Entrevista con Silvia Schujer y Mónica Weiss, ganadoras del Premio de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil Norma Fundalectura 2006 con Hugo tiene hambre.

Thanks to Eileen Hesseling who just shared this review by Sandra Comino.

A funny poem by Silvia Schujer:

Palabrota

Una palabra
palabritera
despalabrábase
por la escalera.

¡Pobre palabra!
se apalabró
palabrincando
cada escalón.

The following is a reading of a book by Silvia Schujer: El esqueleto de la biblioteca

<a title="View El esqueleto de La Biblioteca, Silvia Schujer on Scribd" style="margin: 12px auto 6px; Click on the Language box and then click on the Drop Down arrow next to it. In the Drop Down box, click on Spanish. From there, you can filter in any parameters you wish. In the extended view of a title, look under edition. If it says TRA that means it is a translation. It may also say “Bilingual” in the edition field. Once you have done your search using the filters, you may even narrow you list further by using the Guided Navigation feature in the green box on the left hand side of the Search Result Screen. You can click on Audience, then click on a grade level. It tells you right next to the grade level how many titles are in that category. Baker & Taylor also offers lists under Selection Lists. There is a Spanish list under Selection Lists > CATS (Children's and Teen Services) Categories > Spanish Language > Children's Fiction - Spring 2009 (Espanol), Selection Lists > Pub / Espanol Categories >, Selection Lists > Schools - Never Out of Stock Express Categories > Spanish Language, and Selection Lists > Spanish Language Categories > Children's.

Ordering Books in Spanish
Bound to Stay Bound
www.btsb.com
Find our Spanish/Bilingual titles using the QUICK SEARCH at the top of the screen. Click the pull down box to SUBJECT and simply type in SPANISH. (You should get 522 results that also include BILINGUAL titles too.) If you only wanted to search for Bilingual Books, use the same SUBJECT SEARCH and type in Bilingual. One really neat feature that we have is the ability to reduce thatlistright on the screen. You can use the Search Filters in the left hand margin and reduce this 522 title list immediately. Say you only wanted to see what we had in FICTION. To do that, go to the Classifications under Search Filters and remove the check mark one at a time: Click off the check mark in EASY and let the screen update, then click off Biography and then Non-Fiction. You'll be left with 89 FICTION titlesin Spanish/Bilingual.If you want to see what SPANISH Series & Sets we carry, just click on SERIES & SETS in the left margin and look under BROWSE BY CATEGORY.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149217227074529426.post-33304622197011203272009-03-23T00:34:00.005-05:002009-03-24T23:46:08.547-05:00Chile and Argentina

WEMTA 2009 Slide Show
View more presentations from wannalearntech.

This is a copy of the slide show we used during our presentation. They suggest 2 ways to find them. One way, click on the "Search" drop down menu and choose the link "Advanced Search". A Collection Development search page opens. Change the language to "Spanish" and search using the following Dewey number range - 860-869 (ie. poetry=861). The results page has a "Refine your search- Quick Filters" links on the right side and the links sort the results by interest levels. The second way, create a list of Spanish titles. In the right hand column, click the link, "Search within the List". In the keyword box, type in "translat*" (this identifies titles with "translated" and/or "translation in the note field) and select Spanish in the language box. This identifies/isolates the translated titles. Deselect and click "remove" to remove any titles from the list.

Mackin

Login to the website and click on the drop down menu “Book Lists”. Select “Mackin Book Lists”. On that page look for a drop dow menu “World Languages”. Select “Spanish & Spanish/English” and then the grade level/topic link you want. If you choose a grade level “Elementary Spanish” for example, an “Authentic Spanish” link will be an option. That option will give you lists of books published by Spanish language publishers.

Mayrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01074901905495083432noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149217227074529426.post-84943820977049129912009-03-15T21:58:00.003-05:002009-03-15T22:04:57.438-05:00Summer Online CourseAnnouncing a summer online course from
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

June 22 – July 18, 2009 (4 weeks)

CURRINS 579 Lec 291 Class #49058
Current Topics in Curriculum & Instruction:
Using Children’s Literature to Explore
Latin American/Latino Cultural Heritage

For more information go to:
UW- Milwaukee Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies

Scroll all the way down for a link to a PDF with more information about the course.Mayrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01074901905495083432noreply@blogger.com0
